Castro Valley’s Chanticleers Theatre Announces 2018 Season
Chanticleers Theatre in Castro Valley is pleased to announce the theatre’s 2018 season with four exciting stage productions for East Bay community theater fans to look forward to next year. All four shows feature strong roles for women. It’s the ‘Year of the Woman’ at Chanticleers!
Dial M for Murder, the classic mystery/thriller by Frederick Knott, will begin the 2018 season under the direction of noted Bay Area theater director, Kendall Tieck. Dial M for Murder opens February 2 and runs through February 25, 2018. Made famous by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 motion picture, starring Grace Kelly in the leading role, this story still ranks as one of the great suspense tales of all time.
On a decidedly sweeter note, the popular new Broadway musical version of Little Women takes the stage at Chanticleers in the Spring. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s novel, this musical is a delightful rendition of the classic story of the four March sisters — brassy, tomboy-like, aspiring writer Jo; romantic Meg; pretentious Amy; and kind-hearted Beth — and their beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts while the family patriarch is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. Singing and dancing its way into your heart, Little Women is sure to bring a breath of fresh air to your Spring. Little Women plays April 6 through May 6, 2018 and will be directed by Chanticleers Theatre’s own Artistic Director, John Baiocchi.
The 2018 summer show at Chanticleers is both a gripping drama and a touching comedy. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1981, the characters in Crimes of the Heart will captivate you and their incisive wit and humor will take you by surprise. In brief, it is the story of three sisters, each with quite different personalities and lives, each attempting to discover her own identity. As the show opens, we learn that the youngest sister, Babe, has just shot her husband. That’s just the beginning. Directed by Edward Nattenberg, Crimes of the Heart plays July 27 through Aug 19, 2018.
The fourth and final show of the season, Don’t Dress for Dinner is a smash hit “boulevard comedy” that played to sold out audiences for two years in Paris and six years in London before coming to Broadway in 2012. It is a two-act play written by French playwright Marc Camoletti, about a French husband, Bernard, who plans a “naughty” weekend while his wife, Jacqueline, is away. But of course, as fate would have it, nothing goes right. In fact, everything goes wrong. Mistaken identities, secret relationships, betrayals and wardrobe near-mishaps create confusion as Bernard and his friend, Robert, improvise at breakneck speed to save their friendship, Bernard’s marriage, a bit of a gourmet dinner they planned, and some shred of their remaining dignity. A hilarious and innocent farce, Don’t Dress for Dinner, will be directed by Randy Anger, an actor and director well-known to Chanticleers’ audiences. The show will run from Oct 19 – Nov 11, 2018.
Chanticleers Theatre is located in the Castro Valley Community Park at 3683 Quail Avenue, Castro Valley. Call 510-SEE-LIVE (733-5483) or go to chanticleers.org for reservations/tickets.
